Spring: In the Time of Queen Elizabeth I

Queen Elizabeth I's reign was well-known for artistic, literary, and musical achievements. The Master Singers begin with Benjamin Britten's Choral Dances from "Gloriana", written in praise of Elizabeth I. The ensemble then moves on to the Mass for Five Voices by William Byrd, Elizabeth's court composer. Finally, the Master Singers close the season with settings of Shakespeare texts by Jaakko Mantyjarvi. In recognition of our concert at the National Gallery of Art, where we are helping to celebrate the re-opening of a gallery of American paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, we will also be performing twelve American spirituals of Robert Shaw and Alice Parker.
